Spotlight on Jean Schonberg & the Friday Friendship Dinners

Jean Schonberg

In 1997, Dave and Jean Schonberg began to open their home to men in need of transitional housing. A few years later they joined with the Regeneration Center which provided a program of classes designed to meet spiritual and practical needs of those making a new start in life. The Friday Friendship Dinners began originally as a means to stay in touch with men who had graduated from The Regeneration Center’s program. Former residents could come “home” once a week for a meal, visiting, Bible study and games. Over time, the numbers grew. Men asked to invite their friends. Those friends invited other friends and it became an “open” group. Soon the house was bursting at the seams.

For many years now the event has been held at the 6th Avenue Community Center rather than in Dave and Jean’s home. Jean and her volunteer helpers prepare a meal there each Friday. The location has changed; faces and names have changed; but the event remains the same: a meal, visiting, Bible study and games. Friendships are formed, faith is strengthened, needs are shared and practical help is often given.

Recently Jean asked the group this question, “What does the Friday Night Dinner mean to you?” Here are some of the answers:

“It means that I have a chance to get to know and love the people I’ve grown to know from friends to family. Love it.” LW

“I love getting together with ‘family’ every Friday night. The food is always good and the talks are wonderful. One of the best times in my week.” JRB

“Gives all of us understanding in what being a part of something bigger than ourselves while getting to know Jesus and God better.”

“The loving fellowship.” MB

“For food, for raiment, for life, opportunity and to be thankful to the Lord.” JN

“I’ve enjoyed seeing the Body of Christ here as well as in my Church and the close relationships we’ve made.” J.K.

“I really like Friday Night Fellowship because: good Bible study, good food, and good fellowship!” GJ

“It keeps me from starving (just kidding). Food and fellowship have to be the two greatest combinations of Christian fellowship I can think of. I am blessed to be here and listen to those who want to speak what is in their heart. Thank you for supporting us. Blessings to you!!!” BAB

“Friday Night Fellowship is something to look forward to. The food is always excellent and the games after the Bible discussion are a lot of fun too.”

“Friday nights have given myself and the Life Right ‘crew’ a new family and a solid foundation of support and mentorship.”

“I so enjoy the feeding of our bodies, but come for the feeding of my soul!!” TA

“Love the informal fellowship, faith, food and fellowship.”

“Coming Fridays helps keep me focused on Jesus for the weekend, keeps me sober, and grateful. I come to hear Dave, the fellowship, and because the food is heavenly!” AP

“A very nice gathering. Great fellowship. Always preceded with an excellent meal and fellowship. I love the presentation Dave delivers. An excellent way to wrap up the week. Very nice.”

“Friday is a peaceful pit stop for me after battling all week long with life issues. It recharges me to keep going.” LW

“I have learned so much from all who come here. Always a good eve.”

“I love those who come. God is with and loves needy people like us.”

“Fellowship and Christian commentary.”

“Jesus is calling, Jesus is with us, and always carrying us. He knows the number of hairs on our head! He knows our daily schedule before it happens. We must pray and increase our conscious contact with Him! Every day of our life. Fridays weld all this together.” M.E.

“Dave Schonberg is an excellent speaker and conveys the Bible most accurately. Surely he is, ‘a man of the Lord’. His quest is most reverent and commendable.” J.C.

“Friday evening is a special time of refreshing as Jean shares a home cooked supper and Dave opens the Word and shares the love of Jesus with all. It is the highlight of the week for me!” G.B.
